Meditation

Meditation has SoOoOoOoOoOoooO many benefits, but here are the Flow-relevant goodies. Immediately, meditation brings our brain into the theta state, and in the long run, brings the brains default brainwave frequency closer to a high theta/low alpha state. As we know, a high theta/low alpha state is the optimal place to enter Flow!

Meditation also increases the size and efficiency of various parts of our brain. In particular, meditation increases the size and lowers the activity of the anterior cingulate cortex. This is part of our frontal lobe and is responsible for error detection. Essentially, whenever you make a mistake, this part of your brain lights up. The greater the error, the more it lights up. Lighting up less, means that you are making less error, OR, perhaps, that you’re dealing with errors more efficiently.

Meditation plays an extremely important role in entering Flow in social engagements. As humans, we are highly susceptible to what are called “Cognitive Biases”. Cognitive Biases are systematic ways in which we deviate from rational thought. These are ANTI-Flow Triggers, horrible things that we mostly should be avoiding. Meditation helps us avoid them, but it’s also important to know what these biases are so that we can be more aware of them. I recommended reading Daniel Kahnemans book, “Thinking Fast and Slow” to learn about cognitive biases.

Do you have trouble meditating, does it feel boring, or are you simply not sure if you’re doing it correctly? Well, do you remember electroencephalograms (EEG)? Fortunately, this technology has gotten cheap enough for individuals outside the lab to purchase and use! I’d recommend “Muse – Mediation HeadBand”. It comes with a great app that you can use to get instant feedback about your meditation practice. Hopefully, you recall that soldiers getting into Flow with neurofeedback experienced a 490% boost in learning speed. You can get a similar boost in meditation skill by using Muse!

I also highly recommend “ https://www.headspace.com/ “ for those who need a free option and haven’t been able to quite get into meditation ? HeadSpace helps you meditate consistently through guided meditation!
