Mindset Vs. Trickset

What is it?

Mindset is defined as the established set of attitudes held by someone.

Trickset is a word we use to describe the Individualized abilities one possesses. Generally referring to Prop Spinning.

Here at Healing Stoned, we firmly believe that a performer is not defined by the trickset that they possess. But, is defined by the level of effort one puts forth towards the pursuit of self mastery. This principle is not specific to flow arts, but to all forms of self expression.

The Path

In the previous chapter, we discussed the 2 forms of consciousness. The goal of Holistic Movement is to distract the ‘Headlight’ consciousness, so that the ‘Spotlight’ consciousness has no distraction before it.  The old saying goes “Idle hands are the Devils playthings.” If your ‘Headlight’ isn’t focused on a healthy task, the chances of becoming distracted by things that do not suit your potential growth goes up infinitely. This is the same principle that makes the path of the Yogi, the path of the Fakir, & the path of the Monk a way towards enlightenment. Or, if you will, Self-Realization. Which, in this sense, can be describes as one lacking distraction.

What do we mean by that?

Lets look at some examples; John & Shane have both been spinning the same prop for 1 year. In that time, John has spent the majority of his time learning tricks. Shane has spent the majority of her time looking inward for answers while spinning with foundations in mind.

While John may have more tricks under his belt, he is still left with a mind full of distraction. When he spins, you can see the tricks that he is doing. But, the audience misses how they flow together. Shane, having spent the time with basics & getting her mind right, looks like a more complete artist because of her lack of distraction & her attention to foundation.

Now, we see them side by side.

Who is in a better position to become an amazing prop spinner & performer altogether? At the start of year two, John still has to go back and deal with all of his mental issues that have piled on since an early age. Now, John is becoming even more frustrated because he interprets tricks as success in the industry. With his nice Trickset, John is finding little success with jumping into the world of a performer. Anxieties run rampant as John desperately tries to make something of himself in the flow arts community. 4 years pass & prop spinning becomes just another fad to him.

At the start of year two, Shane is in a much different mental space. She has dealt with a majority of her unjust fear, while simultaneously creating a foundation for her prop spinning to grow on. With a clear mind, she steps bravely into the flow arts community. With her solid foundation, she excels through her second year with her prop. Shane has been able to make friends in this community because she was able to socialize & local flow functions. 4 years pass & prop spinning has become a way of life for Shane.
